Expo 2024 Summary
2024 was a great year for Expo. We’ve seen plenty of updates and new releases, which helped position it as one of the top choices for React Native developers all over the world. The most significant changes to the platform included:
- SDKs 50, 51, and 52 brought incremental enhancements to Expo’s APIs and libraries. They improved performance, stability, and compatibility with the latest React Native features.
- Expo Router v3 and v4 redefined navigation with a file-based routing system inspired by frameworks like Next.js. They included auto-typed routes, build-time static generation for web apps, and <Head/> components for native meta functionalities on iOS and Android.
- DOM Components expanded support for web-focused development and increased cross-platform consistency. It resulted in better experiences for apps targeting both mobile and web platforms.
- Expo Workflows created clearer paths for managing projects, with the “Managed Workflow” offering streamlined development without native code and the “Bare Workflow” providing flexibility for integrating custom native modules.
- Fingerprint introduced biometric capabilities, including fingerprint authentication, allowing developers to add secure and user-friendly authentication mechanisms to their apps.
In 2025 Expo’s team will be focusing further on EAS Workflows, improving developer tools and SDKs, supporting website and API function development, and streamlining app testing and releases.
