How Elastic Block Store Changed AWS

In his recent article Mark Olson, a Senior Principal Engineer at AWS, recounts how Elastic Block Store (EBS), cloud-based block storage, transformed from a simple service using shared hard disk drives (HDDs) into a massive distributed storage system capable of handling over 140 trillion operations daily.

The shift from HDDs to solid-state drives (SSDs) in 2012 dramatically improved EBS’s performance but required further network and software stack optimizations. Through continuous improvements and implementation of Nitro system and the Scalable Reliable Datagram (SRD) protocol Olson and his team managed to ensure the service’s success

AWS is still actively working on improving Elastic Block Store, while Olson continues to look for new ways to improve and iterate to meet the needs of the service’s customers.
