How Netflix’s SafeTest Pioneers A New Approach To UI Testing for Web Applications

Although developing web applications relies heavily on effective UI testing, traditional methods often force developers into a hard choice between control and real-world simulation.

Unit testing offers finely tuned control over the components but requires extensive mocking. End-to-end testing can be more realistic, however, its set-up and maintenance call for a considerable effort on the dev’s part.

In comes Netflix’s newest solution, SafeTest, which combines the strengths of both unit and end-to-end testing. While enabling real browser interactions, it allows developers to mock non-browser dependencies.

SafeTest promises improved test reliability with reduced maintenance requirements. By supporting popular front-end frameworks like React, Next.js, Vue, Svelte, and Angular, along with its mechanism for simulating user permissions and feature flags, SafeTest makes complex scenario testing much easier for developers. What’s more, it includes helpful tools for debugging and analysing, such as extensive reporting featuring video replays and trace views.
