Incident.io Chooses React Native Over Other Solutions
In the newest episode of the Rocket Ship podcast Rory Bain, a product engineer at Incident.io which serves companies such as Netflix or Etsy, revealed why he decided to develop the on-call mobile app at Incident.io using React Native over Kotlin or Flutter.
React Native’s ability to use the existing JavaScript knowledge and create a near-native user experience allowed for fast iterating and development cycles. Expo streamlined the development process further by eliminating the need for platform-specific IDEs like Android Studio or Xcode.
However, cross-platform development has its challenges. To ensure seamless push notifications and critical alerts on Android, Rory’s team needed to implement custom native code using data-only notifications, which are essentially messages that wake up the app in the background.
