Expo SDK 52 Release
On November 12, 2024, Expo released its biggest update yet, SDK 52. This update introduced significant changes, most notably the New Architecture rollout, which is now enabled by default for all new projects. Existing projects can still opt in, though SDK 53 is expected to make this the default for all. Expo Go for SDK 52 and higher supports only the New Architecture.
Platform support has also been updated. The minimum iOS version is now 15.1, and Android’s `minSdkVersion` has been raised to 24, and `compileSdkVersion` to 35.
Additional improvements include the stable release of `expo-video` with enhanced reliability, performance, and new features like lock screen controls and Picture-in-Picture support. `expo-audio` entered beta and offers a modern API for audio integration. `expo-file-system/next` with a redesigned API is also available for testing. It aims to improve file management and the developer experience.
