As a Project Manager of React and React Native development projects, I need to admit it’s fascinating to see how Agile shapes the entire workflow and team dynamics. In this article, I’ll share a deep dive into the main advantages of this methodology (which I deeply admire, as you might guess from the previous sentences).

From firsthand accounts of better project flexibility to improved client interactions and beyond, I’ll detail how it has become an important tool in helping to build better software.

What is the Agile project management method?

Agile methodology is a project management approach supporting continuous collaboration, improvement, and flexibility. It starkly contrasts with the traditional waterfall methodology, which followed a linear and sequential approach.

Waterfall vs Agile

The waterfall method, first described in a presentation at the Symposium on Advanced Programming Methods for Digital Computers on 29 June 1956 by Herbert D. Benington, was initially revolutionary for bringing discipline to software development, ensuring there was a clear specification to follow, much like Henry Ford’s assembly line innovations in 1913. However, it lacked the flexibility to adapt to changes, which became increasingly crucial as software development environments evolved​​.

The Agile Manifesto, drafted in 2001 by 17 technologists, established Agile’s core principles:

  • Individuals and interactions over processes and tools.
  • Working software over extensive documentation.
  • Customer collaboration over contract negotiation.
  • Responding to change over following a project plan.

Agile’s rise overlapped with the growth of internet applications in startups, where quick adaptation and fast market launches were essential. Agile’s design for flexibility allowed teams to break down complex problems and adapt quickly based on stakeholders’ and development team’s feedback, fostering active team member contribution and personal responsibility.

Today, Agile integrates various frameworks like Scrum, Kanban, Lean, and XP, each embodying Agile principles in unique ways. Scrum methodology and XP are favoured in software development, while Kanban suits service-oriented teams. Agile has evolved to prioritize project team effectiveness over strict rules, encouraging openness, trust, and autonomy.

Agile’s growth and popularity are attributed to its suitability for modern development environments, offering a collaborative, flexible, and responsive alternative to traditional methodologies.

I work with software development and I can’t oversee the huge value Agile methodology brings to our projects. Its rise in popularity isn’t surprising when you consider the core benefits.

To be honest, it’s hard to imagine managing software development without the methodologies. It’s a mindset that transforms the way we approach, execute, and deliver projects.

Let’s delve into the 7 main advantages of Agile methodology that have solidified its place as a cornerstone among various development teams across the world.

Better Flexibility and Responsiveness: Adapting to Change in React/React Native Projects

The ability to swiftly adapt to evolving project requirements is a necessity. As I oversee dynamic projects with multiple phases, I’ve seen how Agile-oriented methodologies empower us to pivot with precision and speed on each project level.

Take, for instance, a recent web platform project we undertook. Midway through the development, our client needed significant changes to the user interface to better cater to their growing user base. In a traditional approach to project management, such a request could have derailed the project timeline or bloated the budget. However, with Agile, our response was seamless and efficient.

When faced with a major change request during a sprint, we realised that our initial sprint goals were no longer viable. Acting swiftly, we called a meeting with stakeholders to address it. The decision was made to cancel the current sprint – a step not taken lightly, but necessary under the circumstances. This led us to an immediate retrospective meeting where we reflected, learned from our experiences, and adapted our strategy.

We then launched a new sprint planning session. It involved a complete realignment of our priorities and resources to accommodate the new direction. The development team quickly adapted their workflow to the revised objectives. By the end of the redefined sprint, we met the new requirements and ensured the project remained on track.

This experience highlighted the value of Agile in managing projects that demand flexibility. It simply allows us to adapt to changes in a way that maintains project integrity, team morale, and, most importantly, client satisfaction.

Google’s use of Agile in the development of Google AdWords, shows its ability to swiftly adapt to new technologies and user requirements. Scrum enables an effective iterative approach and ongoing improvements thanks to that, Google ensured their products remained relevant and competitive.

Agile methodology is great for technical execution but also for fostering strong client relationships. And, of course, it is crucial in web and mobile development projects, where client involvement is often integral to the project’s success.

The Agile approach allows us to integrate customer feedback directly into the development cycle. Regular sprint reviews and sprint planning sessions are platforms for open dialogue, enabling us to align our work closely with the client’s vision and increasing customer satisfaction. And this constant interaction allows us to build a deeper trust and understanding between us and the client.

For instance, during a complex web platform development, the client suggested a new feature addition (creation of a 2FA for security reasons) that wasn’t included in the brief.

Through discussions and Agile planning, we were able to add this feature to the next sprint without big changes in the project time delivery.

During the sprint retrospectives, we always try to address client concerns.

Recently, one of the clients raised an issue during a sprint retrospective about difficulties their internal development team faced with some aspects of the project that they couldn’t manage on their own. Plus, with its focus on short-term iterations, long-term planning might not always get the attention it needs.

Despite these issues, many teams find that Agile’s pros outweigh these drawbacks, especially in environments where flexibility and rapid development are key.


Agile methodology has transformed the entire process of development, offering a flexible, collaborative approach that’s vital for modern project management. I value Agile for its adaptability, customer focus, and iterative nature.

Although Agile has its challenges, such as fluid scheduling and the need for intense collaboration, its benefits in fostering innovation and adapting to rapid changes are invaluable. I’m truly grateful for how Agile has shaped our approach to software development.
